Environmental News arrowApril 2005

March was a much more friendly month, starting cold but blossoming almost into Summer rather than Spring.

Some days, butterflies were to be seen everywhere, and the start of the incoming migrant birds was evident. I am always surprised by the number of chiff-chaffs we hear, and occasionally see. I often get one stopping in my garden for a few days. He sings passionately (and it seems continually) for a lady to stop by, but they all pass over and he moves on to try in a different location. Friends tell me there have been quite a few ospreys coming through for the Summer. They are also earlier this year, as some birds now overwinter in the south of Spain, rather than travelling on to Africa.

Looking at local birds, I keep seeing buzzards in all parts of our area, and they must have had a very good year. Had a look at Hatchpond last week, and again buzzards, as well as a full complement of moorhens, coots, ducks and gulls. Also the crested grebes were there and they gave me an impromptu display of head bobbing. One cormorant busy fishing, and one reed warbler near the input lake. Still had about eight teal in the shallows. I will try and check whether they are now permanent residents.

Currently the season for tadpoles, and I sometimes go to the SE corner of Pocket Park, where there is a shallow muddy pool that dries up in Summer, but at this time of year is a heaving mass of tadpoles. Why this particular little pond is so popular I just don't know.

The new Countryside Guide is still not available, so dates for events are hard to come by. Not much time left for the hacking and cutting tasks, as the end of April is the deadline.

DCV are scrub clearing at Ham Common on 24th April, and Friends of Broadstone Nature Reserve are busy on the same date (10.00 AM Fontmell Road entrance)

The Great Dorset Beach Clean is due on 10th April. Lots of bodies taking part.
