Patrick Canavan – Labour candidate for Member of Parliament for Mid Dorset and North Poole

patrickcanavanMy experience to date is that the issues being raised in this Mid Dorset and North Poole are very much the ones that are getting coverage nationally. The NHS is being mentioned a lot and Labour has said that we want to invest a further £2.5 billion over and above current spending plans. We need to put patients before private profit and reverse the current trend of selling off parts of the NHS to the private sector. Many people recognise that it’s not just about money as we need to ensure that we shift resources from acute services to prevention and the community sector by integrating social care with health care so that we can look after our ageing population more effectively. Labour is committed to 20,000 more nurses and 8,000 more doctors and to guarantee a GP appointment within 48 hours.

Jobs and affordable houses are key topics, which is why Labour is proposing a jobs guarantee for young people and more apprenticeships. With prices having risen faster than wages many families are struggling with the cost of living so we need to ensure that we pay people properly and that we get rid of zero hour contracts. To help we are also saying that Labour would freeze gas and electric bills so that costs can only come down. Pensioners also need more help and I am personally very worried by the number of scam schemes that seem to be around at the moment designed to take advantage of elderly people.

More locally the issues are quite diverse given the geographical spread of this constituency. So it will be everything from roads to planning and even allotments. All these are important so people have to make a choice about what sort of Government and Local Authority they want.

Clearly there are many other issues and I will gladly send you a copy of Labour’s final election manifesto once this is published.
